This 4×4 self-drive sand training day can be driven in any 4×4 vehicle with low range.
This 4×4 one day training tour is aimed at those wanting to learn the basics of soft-sand driving. Atlantis Dunes is the perfect training venue situated just north of Cape Town. The day will include instruction and best practice options. The route covers tyre deflation, dune driving techniques, recoveries, correct gear ratios, desert blindness and safety. The training is ideal for absolute novices as well as intermediates wanting to brush up on sand driving skills. You will be supplied with a training manual (to keep) and a Certificate of Completion at the end of the course.
Bring your own padkos, drinks and snacks. Strictly no alcohol allowed. Vehicles are searched at the gates, and the staff there know all the tricks. They will check any unmarked bottles or containers. Please note there are also no drones allowed.
The day kicks off bright and early. We meet at 08.00 sharp at the Atlantis Dunes facility.
- Make sure you have sufficient fuel for the day and bear in mind that your vehicle’s fuel consumption will be considerably worse with deflated tyres as well as using low range. It is best to fill up before you arrive.
- Check that your spare wheel is fully inflated and that you have your jack and wheel spanner, in good working order.
- You will require recovery points front and rear. On some vehicles these are often hidden by a small plastic cover in the bumper. In your tool kit there should be a towing eye, which screws into a thread in the bumper behind the little cover. Check this at home and know where everything is BEFORE the training day. Please fit any towing eyes at home. It’s much easier attaching a tow rope which is not buried in the sand.
We will take a lunch break somewhere in the dunes, so bring easy to prep padkos and something cold to drink, and remember it gets very hot in the dunes and there is almost no shade. Dress appropriately and bring, sunscreen, an awning or umbrella and a hat and lots of cold water. Dark glasses are essential and if you have Polaroids, even better. There is hardly any shade in the dunes, so come prepared for a hot day.
